LambdaFields is a research-driven deep-tech startup focused on probabilistic inference for complex physical systems.
We believe in transparent, physics-informed models that calibrate themselves, quantify uncertainty, and scale to operational use. Our mission is to bridge the gap between advanced scientific methodology and practical, decision-relevant applications. We develop methods to extract reliable high-resolution information from sparse, noisy, and incomplete data based on robust and interpretable algorithms.
LambdaFields has been founded by Dr. Jakob Knollmüller and Dr. Philipp Arras. Their scientific background is in astrophysics and statistical signal processing.

About Dr. Philipp Arras

Philipp Arras is a co-founder of LambdaFields, where he applies his deep expertise in computational statistics and physics to the field of medical imaging. His work bridges the gap between astrophysics and medicine, leveraging advanced Bayesian imaging algorithms to reconstruct high-quality images from complex, often noisy, data.
From the Cosmos to the Clinic
Philipp’s career began in the world of fundamental science. During his Ph.D. and postdoc at the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics, he developed groundbreaking Bayesian statistics algorithms to image radio telescope observations. His aim was to “squeeze out all the information present” in datasets to achieve the highest possible resolution, complete with robust uncertainty quantification. This work resulted in several widely used software projects, including NIFTy, resolve, and ducc.
A New Chapter
Following his time as a strategy consultant at Bain & Company, Philipp embarked on a new mission: to apply his advanced imaging tools to medical imaging. He recognized the powerful parallels between radio astronomy and MR imaging—both measure data in the Fourier domain and both face the challenge of reconstructing a clear picture from incomplete and noisy data. This realization led him to dedicate himself to the field of medical imaging, co-founding LambdaFields to bring his innovative, physics-based algorithms to the medical community.

About Dr. Jakob Knollmüller

Jakob Knollmüller is a co-founder of LambdaFields, where he applies his expertise in Bayesian inference and signal reconstruction to develop imaging technology for complex, data-limited problems across science and industry. His work focuses on transforming incomplete and noisy measurements into reliable, high-quality information.
From Signals to Structure
Jakob’s background is in physics, with a strong focus on statistics and machine learning. During his Ph.D. at the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics and his postdoctoral work at the ORIGINS Data Science Lab in Munich, he developed new algorithms that combine Bayesian statistics and machine learning to reconstruct hidden structures from challenging data. He is also an active member of the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, where he contributes to developing methods for imaging some of the most demanding astronomical observations. His research spans a range of astrophysical applications—especially radio interferometry and VLBI—while also advancing core machine learning approaches for probabilistic inference.
A Broader Mission
Building on this foundation, Jakob co-founded LambdaFields to bring advanced reconstruction tools beyond academia. He recognized that the challenge of extracting structure from incomplete signals recurs across domains—whether in medicine, physics, or engineering. At LambdaFields, he is dedicated to turning cutting-edge inference methods into practical solutions that help uncover the invisible.
